KHARKOV, UKRAINE
Kharkov was the first capital of independent Ukraine. It is the largest industrial, scientific, and educational (more 22 post-secondary institutions) center in Ukraine. Kharkov has a population of over two million people. There is an extended subway network operating in Kharkov, a large number of theaters, museums, recreational centers, and many other places to visit.

Kharkov’s National Technical University “Kharkov’s Politechnical Institute” (NTU “KPI”) was established in 1885. It is the oldest establishment of it’s kind in Ukraine. From NTU “KPI” graduated many famous scientists and inventors, such as L.D. Landau, academicians N.N. Beketov, I.P. Budnikov, A.K. Valter, A.M. Lyapunov, K.D. Sinelnikov, G.F. Proskura, just to name a few. NTU “KPI” is associated with the promotion of technical science in such branches as mechanics, the theory of strength, applied chemistry, aviation, nuclear physics and cryogenics, electrical and heat-power engineering, tractor construction, diesel locomotive building, etc in Ukraine. Over 115 thousands of engineers have graduated from NTU “KPI” over 117 years of it’s existence.

Presently in NTU “KPI” there are 17 different faculties, 82 departments, with over 15 thousands of undergraduates, 320 graduate students, in 63 different vocations, there are also over 17 hundred professors. Only NTU “KPI” prepares specialists in such important professions as turbine construction for the atomic power plants, the computer systems of the engine control of internal combustion, technologies of fats and fat substitutes, boiler reactor engineering.

NTU “KPI” has the palace of students with the dancing and showrooms, large sport complex with two swimming pools, two resorts one in the Black Sea in the Crimea and another on the river Severskiy Donets not far from Kharkov.

NTU “KPI” collaborates with educational institutions in the USA, England, Germany, Canada, France, Italy, India, Japan, China and other countries of world in providing international programs, conducting a variety of projects, and providing different grants. At this moment about 700 foreign undergraduate and graduate students are studying in NTU “KPI”.

Courses of the Russian language for foreign citizens are based at the Preparatory Faculty for the Foreign Citizens, which has been operating in NTU “KPI” since 1973. Preparatory Faculty for the Foreign Citizens is located in the separate large building, with the specialized lecture halls, language labs, computer classes, conference hall, and library for foreign students (more than 24000 books).

All the instructors in the Preparatory Faculty for the Foreign Citizens are very experienced, they have taught students in India, China, Sudan, Algeria, Syria, France, Austria, Vietnam and other countries. More than 20% of instructors have a PhD degree.

In the preparatory faculty there are two departments: the department of humanities (study of Russian, Ukrainian, English,  French, sociology, logic, bases of pedagogy and psychology, Slavic culture, regional geography, history) and the department of natural sciences (study of mathematics, physics, chemistry, information theory, ecology, economy, etc.).

Therefore the study of Slavic languages (Russian and Ukrainian) can go in three basic directions: the everyday language, professional (technical-engineering, economic, ecological, etc..) and humanitarian (ethnography, civilization, etc.).

There are three levels of instruction: beginner, intermediate, advanced.

NTU “KPI” is a post-secondary educational institution that has been accredited at the summit level and therefore, in most cases, credits earned by students in NTU “KPI” can be transferred to their home universities. The courses of Russian language are 3 months (216 academic hours) long. Instruction can be conducted in English for the additional charge.

Preparatory faculty ensures the access to e-mail for all it’s students.

Students stay in the university residence. Maximal occupancy is 2 people per room. Washrooms are shared by two rooms (unit-block system). There are two kitchens on each floor. Showers are located on the first floor. Average budget for the food would be around $500US for the whole term. There is option to stay with a family during the study period, that includes the nutrition (breakfast and supper).

Food is not included in the cost of the program.

Students can request to be taken on foot or bus excursions through the historical places and the cultural centers Kharkov and region, trips to the Ukraine’s capital - Kiev. Upon arrival students will be taken to visit museums and theaters of Kharkov, and shown around the different markets to get familiar with the city and how it works. All these trips are optional and depend on the wishes of group.
