ST. PETERSBURG

The Institute of International Educational Programs

The Institution: The Saint-Petersburg State Technical University is one of the leading universities in Russia with an international reputation and student body of 18 000 including 1 500 from outside Russia.

The University has a century long tradition of quality teaching and research. Throughout its history it has built an impressive network of international contacts and has trained hundreds of students to enter the Russian University System.

Founded in 1996 on the basis of the University's Preparatory Department the Institute of International Educational Programs (the IIEP) is in charge of organizing and coordinating the University's international projects and programs in the field of education. It is housed in the spacious modern building, which is equipped with up-to-date facilities, including lecture halls and study rooms, computer labs, Internet and e-mail access, library, sports and training facilities, a large residents hall and a cafe.

Canadian program: In addition to facilities and support provided by the Faculty, the Director of the Canadian Program, a St. Petersburg-based group leader, their English-speaking Russian staff and support network are available to help students prepare for their stay in Moscow, deal with problems arising, and assist them in getting the most out of their stay.

Course options: Students enrolled through InterUniversity Centre Canada's Russian language and culture program may also take courses in English in Russian history and politics and Russian Literature.

Academic credit: This is a program of The Institute of International Educational Programs. Since this University is an accredited institution of higher education, credit can usually be transferred to your home university.

Accommodations: Students will be housed in the dormitories on the campus of the University, two to a room. Each room has a refrigerator, and there is a kitchen and shared washroom facilities for each wing (max. 20 students). Meals: Not included in the cost of the program.

Meals may be taken in the University cafeterias. Cooking is possible in kitchens located in the dorms. A minimum budget for meals would be about US$400, an average budget about US$550.

The orientation is designed to get you familiar with the university, its services, the area around the university and the city in general. The activities of this phase last for about the first two or three weeks of the program, although we will have activities such as a speaker night and other trips planned throughout the semester.

Orientation Activities Include:

  • Hermitage tour
  • Peter and Paul Fortress
  • Seige of Leningrad museum
  • Walking tour along Nevsky Prospect, St. Petersburg's main drag
  • Saviour of the Blood Cathedral
  • A night at the theatre, ballet or a play
  • St. Isaac's Cathedral
  • The Summer Palace at Peterhoff
  • Tour of the markets and the university

The group also usually takes a trip to a city surrounding St. Petersburg, such as Pushkin or Lomonosov, which will give you an idea of Russian Provincial life, and to Moscow. These trips are optional and depend on the wishes of the group. InterUniversity Centre Canada has a program and services in Moscow which can help you during your trip there.
