Itinerary of the
20 August – 10 September expedition
Participants should arrive at least one day before
the start of the course. Stay at MSU, provide with map
of Moscow and MSU surroundings, guide to Metro, etc.
Day 1 of course (20.08.03). Visit to MSU museum, a
session in a lecture room, to go over the itinerary
and such items as safety, health, organization, who
is who. etc. That evening, departure by air for Krasnoyarsk.
Day 2 (21.08.03). Arrive Krasnoyarsk. Go to Kaltat
to ski hotel, check in, morning rest period. Afternoon
meet Stolby staff, and hike in Stolby including the
rocks, and discuss taiga ecology. Evening overview lecture,
on the trees, vegetation and animals of the taiga.
Days 3 and 4 (22-23.08.03). One day trip with the
ski-lift, another to do a project on taiga ecology in
relation to slope exposure. Both evenings will see lectures
by local scientists (Stolby staff).
Day 5 (24.08.03). Morning free, or some interesting
excursion, or even a lecture. But also packing up. After
lunch departure for Krasnoyarsk for free time, post
office, e-mail, shopping etc. Evening departure by train
to Shira.
Day 6 (25.08.03). Arrive early am at Shira. Stay in
cottages, Rest period. Later morning meet Khakassia
staff, and make an excursion to the steppe site "Itcul
lake", soil, flora and fauna, archeological site.
Evening lecture on steppe ecology. Sauna.
Day 7 (26.08.03). Excursion to Ivanovskije lakes.
Visit to alpine landscapes (Pinus sibirica-Abies sibirica
spars stands, Subalpine and alpine grasslands, alpine
tundra, unique Betula tortuosa stands, lake cascades
and waterfalls). Snowfield (size is about 1 km).
Day 8 (27.08.03). Excursion to Bele lake ( Steppe,
lakes, archeological site) and Lectures on fire, steppe
history and grazing effects. Lecture on regional prehistory.
The Shira museum
Day 9 (28.08.03). Excursion to Ijussky reserve. Excursions
to steppe-forest, taiga sites (soil, flora, fauna).
Archeological site (ancient human place). Archeological
cave (the ancient human place).
Day 10 (29.08.03) a project of steppe-forest ecotone.
Kuznetsky Alatau foothills (15-20 km from Shira). Sauna.
Day 11 (30.08.01) Kamyzjak steppe (flora excursion),
Salbykskyburial mound (archeological excursion), Ulug-Kol
lake (ornithological excursion).Go to Shushenskoye in
the evening.=20
Day 12 (31.08.03). Visit to "Shushensky bor"
reserve, museum of nature and Historical-etnography
museum.=20
Day 13 (01.09.03) Visit to dam and trout hatchery.
Then start trip on the reservoir by boat, get to the
cordon "Golaya" (Sayano-Shushensky reserve).
Visit waterfall "katushka" (on the way) and
typical mountain-taiga boitopes. Sauna.
Day 14 (02.09.03). Go to cordon "Kurgol"
or "Malye ury", excursions on land to study
the climatic effects on the ecology of transversing
the Sayan mountains. Lecture "South Siberian mountains
ecosystems" (route to Sayan canyon). Sauna.
Day 15 (03.09.03) Go to Iilig-Khem tract. Wild goats,
hike in wild goat habitat, discuss their biology.
Day 16 (04.09.03). Travel via Kyzyl (rest and visit
geographical Asia Center) to campsite at Tore-Hol. Rest.
Day 17 (05.09.03). Excursions to sand desert "Tsuger
Els", Lecture "Central Asia desert ecosystems
and desertification processes". Excursion to the
rock sites "Kara-Khai", "Kyzyl-Khai".
Stay in yurts and tents.
Day 18 (06.09.03). Go to Yamaalyg. Project dealing
with desert and steppe rodents. Ersin village, visit
stone-cutting master, folklore group Stay in yurts and
tents.
Day 19 (07.09.03). Go to Kyzyl, visit museum. Rest.
Stay in hotel.
Day 20 (08.09.03).Helicopter excursions to a site
in the Sayan mountains (alpine tundra).It's extra-cost
option, helicopter costs about 1200$ per hour. But there
are only 2 helicopters. They could be on domestic ambulance
flights. So, we need to have an emergency version of
a program for this day !!! Stay in hotel.
Day 21 (09.09.03) Go to Abakan. Excursion in Sayan
mountains on the way (taiga-tundra ecotone and alpine
tundra). Stay in hotel in Abakan.
Day 22 (10.09.03).Return to Moscow either from Abakan,
overnight at MSU.
